First steps to Edit your Novel

I made it through another 1,200 words. During my editing process, I’m trying to do the following. These are a few editing tips I have picked up.

Save your original draft.
Correct spelling errors.
Correct grammar errors.

Eliminate portions of text that you are sure you want to cut.
Keep all discarded portions of your novel in a separate file – just in case.
Rewrite sentences for readability.
Write down any ideas that you have for future changes.

This is my second trip through this particular work, cutting out words, sentences, and then rewriting. It’s a long process. Cutting the fluff out of your story, makes it move smoothly and more interesting to the reader.

So don’t be afraid to cut those adverbs. Words to consider cutting also include: That and Had.
